May 06, 2011

Panasonic plans to build a new lithium-ion battery plant and expand lithium-ion battery output at its existing plant in China in 2012, according to an April 25, 2011 report by the Wall Street Journal. It is reported that the new plant will be established in the city of Suzhou, eastern China. Panasonic is projected to add facilities at its Sanyo's lithium-ion battery plant located in Beijing to expand production. Sanyo became Panasonic's wholly-owned subsidiary on April 1, 2011. Panasonic plans to end lithium-ion battery production at its plant located in Moriguchi, Osaka Prefecture, by the end of March 2012 and move output to other plants in Japan and China. It is expected that the Moriguchi plant will focus on R&D. Panasonic estimates that the company's production capacity of lithium-ion battery for consumer electronics will grow by 50% by 2015.
